Pfizer, the maker of the world's biggest prescription drug company, has entered into a settlement with the Food and Drug Administration over its so-called arthritis drug Celebrex. The company will pay $2.8 billion to settle more than 100,000 lawsuits filed against it by its patients, who contend that the drug caused them serious injuries. The settlement, announced Monday by the Food and Drug Administration, will pay Pfizer a portion of the $2.8 billion the FDA was expected to pay for Celebrex. It will also pay a portion of the $1.4 billion the FDA will have to pay to settle some of the lawsuits filed against it. The settlement will apply to a number of other drugs, including Lipitor, Plendil and Celebrex.
Celebrex is among Pfizer's biggest prescription drug companies. It was approved for use in Europe in 1992 and the United States in 1999. The drug's manufacturer, GlaxoSmithKline Plc, has been accused of running off a series of lawsuits. The company said it would pay $2.8 billion to settle some of the largest suits in the United States filed by its arthritis patients. Pfizer said it would also pay a portion of the $1.4 billion in civil penalties and a $1.4 billion settlement.
The settlement comes as the FDA is taking a step in a move to increase the number of FDA-approved drugs that patients with arthritis can legally use for the treatment of their conditions. The FDA has been investigating whether Celebrex caused a condition known as rheumatoid arthritis.
The pharmaceutical company has sued the FDA over the drug since its manufacturer, Schering-Plough Inc., denied the drug's safety, effectiveness and quality. The company also said it would pay $1.3 billion to settle some of the lawsuits filed against it.
The settlement will add to the number of Celebrex lawsuits that the FDA is investigating.
The company's legal team will determine whether Pfizer is a proper defendant.
This news comes after a report that Merck & Co. Inc. has been forced to recall two of its cholesterol-lowering drug drugs because of safety issues that led the FDA to recommend that the company stop sales of the older brand-name drug. The recall came after Merck & Co. said it would pay $1.2 billion to settle several lawsuits filed against it.
Merck said it will continue its sales and marketing efforts to promote the arthritis drug, but will not have any responsibility for the legal action that led to the recall. The company said the FDA is considering other ways to reduce its share prices, including allowing it to switch from the generic drug, Lipitor.
In December, the FDA said it would investigate whether Pfizer has engaged in conduct that led to the recall. The company also said it would pay up to $1.4 billion to settle a number of lawsuits filed against it by its patients.

Celebrex is usually taken orally, once daily, with or without food, or as directed by your healthcare provider. However, if you are using the medicine for an ongoing condition, your doctor may increase your dose, or decrease your dose based on your individual needs.
